“All eyes on Rafah” refers to the city of Rafah in Gaza. Despite the widespread criticism, Israel promised to continue its Rafah offensive. Beginning in early May, the Israeli military has been conducting what it refers to as a “limited operation” in Rafah.
“All eyes on Rafah” was the catchphrase that went viral on social media on Tuesday as people from all over the world expressed their solidarity for the Palestinians living in the war-torn Gaza Strip’s Rafah city. The expression “all eyes on Rafah” alludes to the ongoing slaughter in Gaza’s Rafah, where over 1.4 million Palestinians are seeking refuge, according to Iran’s Embassy in India.
Despite international condemnation and an injunction from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) requiring Israel to cease its military operations in the region, Israel has persisted in carrying out attacks there. On Tuesday, May 28, two European nations, Norway and Spain, formally recognized a Palestinian state in a historic but “symbolic” gesture. Ireland hasn’t yet done the same.
Over a million people, or over half of Gaza’s population, reside at Rafah, the southernmost point of departure from Gaza City that borders the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. Since Israel began what it described as a small assault there earlier this month, the majority have left once more. Feld to a secure location? There is no such thing as a secure area in Gaza, according to UNRWA, the UN organization for Palestinian refugees.
All eyes on Rafah: Here’s what’s happening — 10 points
1. The strike on Rafah was carried out by Israel late on Sunday, following hours of rocket fire from Hamas into the Tel Aviv region, the majority of which were intercepted. According to the government media office in Gaza, an Israeli attack on a tent camp housing displaced persons in Rafah resulted in at least 45 deaths and 200 injuries, CNN said.
In a post on X on Tuesday, UNRWA stated that they were unable to get in complete contact with its staff in Gaza and that “Gaza has turned into hell on earth.” There is no safe spot in the Gaza Strip, despite the fact that families are still fleeing conflict there.
Two top Hamas operatives were targeted and killed in Sunday’s strike in the southern Rafah region, according to Israel’s military. However, the attack also set off a fire that was denounced as a “massacre” by the Palestinians and many Arab nations.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, described the nation’s attack on the camp as a “tragic mistake” on Monday.
2. The incident made people all around the world angry with Israel. According to a spokesman for the US National Security Council, Israel “must take every precaution possible to protect civilians.”
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron wrote on X, saying, “Very terrible images after this weekend’s bombings in Rafah…We desperately need an agreement to free the prisoners and provide assistance, together with a combat halt to enable efforts toward a durable, long-term truce.”
Calling it a component of “a systematic policy aimed at widening the scope of death and destruction in the Gaza Strip to make it uninhabitable,” Egypt denounced the “targeting of defenceless civilians.”
Saudi Arabia denounced “the ongoing massacres,” Jordan charged Israel with “ongoing war crimes,” and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged “to hold these barbarians and murderers accountable.”
In addition to expressing “concern that the bombing will complicate ongoing mediation efforts” towards a truce, Qatar denounced a “dangerous violation of international law.”
3. According to a UNRWA assessment released on Tuesday, since early May, around a million Palestinians have fled the Israeli onslaught in Rafah. However, a number of Palestinians who have been traveling across the Gaza Strip for the past several months have expressed dissatisfaction at being constantly at risk of Israeli assaults.
“With nowhere safe to go and amidst bombardments, lack of food and water, piles of waste, and unsuitable living conditions,” the UNRWA stated of the departure from Rafah.
4. Despite international outrage and a warning from the US not to move further, Israel pledged to continue its Rafah attack. Early in May, the Israeli military began what it claims is a limited operation in Rafah.
The goal of the operation is to eliminate fighters and destroy Gaza Strip infrastructure utilized by Hamas. Approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) distant, Israel instructed people to relocate to a “extended humanitarian zone,” according to Reuters.
5. Israel has continued its bombardment in defiance of a Friday judgment by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the highest court of the United Nations, directing it to cease operations in the southern Gazan city of Rafah and evacuate the territory. In addition to the extraordinary degree of diplomatic pressure Netanyahu is already under due to the Gaza War, the International Court of Justice issued an injunction requiring Israel to cease its attack in the city.
In an order backed by 13 of 15 judges, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) President Judge Nawaf Salam declared that “Israel must immediately halt its military offensive and any other action in the Rafah Governorate which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.”
6. “All eyes on Rafah” became a social media sensation, with many people expressing their solidarity for the Palestinians residing in the city of Gaza. The actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu sent a message on Instagram Stories on the crisis between Israel and Palestine. She reposted posts criticizing Israel’s assault on Rafah. Gauahar Khan, Swara Bhaskar, and actor Dia Mirza were among those who reposted a number of messages regarding the Rafah incident.
7. In an effort to end the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, find a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and end the Gaza war, Spain and Norway formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday, May 28. Additionally, Ireland has declared that on May 28, it will formally recognize the state of Palestine.
“The state of Palestine must be viable with the West Bank and Gaza connected by a corridor and with East Jerusalem as its capital, and it must be unified under the legitimate government of the Palestinian national authority,” stated Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, according to a report from The Guardian.
8. Israel has consistently denounced the three European nations’ action, claiming that it supports the violent Palestinian organization Hamas. Israel Katz, the foreign minister, accused Spain of caving in to Hamas in a series of tweets.
9. According to an AFP count based on Israeli government estimates, the war began with the October 7 Hamas onslaught on southern Israel, which claimed the lives of over 1,170 persons, the majority of whom were civilians. 252 captives were also taken by militants; 121 of them are still in Gaza, including 37 who the army claims are dead.
Gaza’s health ministry reports that at least 36,050 people have died and 81,136 people have been injured as a result of Israel’s retaliatory attack, the majority of them are civilians.
10. The debate over Palestinian statehood in international politics was revived by the Israel-Hamas conflict that erupted in Gaza in October of last year. Israel said that the Hamas strike showed how having an independent state on its border would jeopardize its security. Nonetheless, a number of nations assert that the much-discussed two-state option is what would ultimately lead to peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.
